IDEA UK is bringing you the Art & Design for Advocacy Lab first pioneered in Macedonia. Art & Design for Advocacy Lab brings together peer educators, young people, youth workers and educators to experiment together to develop a visual language to communicate their own thoughts, messages and opinions.

Our goal is that participants in this Lab use and pass on these essential skills for advocacy to their peers across the UK. (and have some fun in doing so)

Check out the highlights from the 2015 Art and Design for Advocacy training, which brought together a talented group of over 50 youth artivists from Albania, Greece, Bulgaria, Macedonia, Kosovo, Serbia, Montenegro, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia and Slovenia to learn how art can influence advocacy to solve their burning societal issues.

Aleksandar Manasiev, a professional journalist from Skopje agreed to be a trainer for journalism sessions at a Balkan Youth Newsroom’s training in Stip, Macedonia, with the expectation that he would stand in front of a group of young people that have a great deal of skepticism towards journalism. This is particularly the case as the profession is experiencing significant loss of pride in the country’s highly polarized society.

With a lizard face in the journalistic jungle

Walking down the streets in Niš, Serbia with your face painted as a lizard can be an awkward experience. Some people stare at you, some are laughing. Some are pointing fingers and some are even frightened. But when you want to bring life to a story, instead of simply retelling it, this is a price worth paying. That is so, at least for Danijel Frfalanović, a participant on the Balkan Youth Newsroom training in Niš.

When some 20 young people from Niš went out on a story hunt in the town, as part of their journalism training, a sudden burst of adrenaline rush coming out of their first journalistic experience dazzled their minds. Various youth related issues occupied their conversation and with each new story idea, a new debate emerged. And as the debates heated, a desperate need for more information needed in order to feed the debate, showed them the true power and thrive that the journalistic investigation holds.

IDEA South East Europe has launched its Debate in the Neighborhood program with a 'training of trainers' event from 10 to 13 March 2014 in Macedonia.

Ten people from four partner organizations were trained to run Debate in the Neighborhood debate clubs within their organizations.

“20 minutes entrepreneurship” is a series of public debates on youth and entrepreneurship in Macedonia organized by IDEA Southeast Europe and Youth Entrepreneurial Service (YES) Foundation. It’s a public debate event where all aspects of youth and entrepreneurship will be discussed following the rules of debate with pro and con side for all motions.
