Czech high school students participate in trainings and practice debates

The Czech Debate Association ADK organised the Open Gate Open and Debate Training in Babice over the weekend of September 20 to 22. The debate training was open to high school students from all over the Czech Republic..A total of 46 students participated in the event in the Open Gate Open Boarding School. The participants took part in one of two tracks: one for more experienced debaters focused on the Karl Popper Debate format and one for beginners who combined training with trial debates.

The event started on Friday with a debate round on: "This House Would abolish the minimum wage" and the first parts of the debate training. They continued on Saturday with a debate round on "This House Believes That corporal punishment should be allowed at schools" followed by trainings. Then three paralel seminars took place on debate-related issues. The beginners did their first debate in the afternoon, on an impromptu motion. After that, everyone went back into three paralel seminars again. The seminars covered topics such as style, how to use evidence in debates and opposition strategies, but also the EU governance structure.The event was concluded with a great talent show on the evening and one more round of debates on Sunday.

The Open Gate Open was organised as part of the project idebateEU. This is a cooperation project of IDEA Amsterdam, IDEA London and ten IDEA members from all across Europe. The project aims to improve cooperation between IDEA and its members and between members, sharing debate methodologies and organisational knowledge in the framework of common activities on European topics. The project is made possible with support of the Europe for Citizens Programme of the European Commission.
