On behalf of the staff and students of the Willamette University Debate Union and the Philomathean Society, I am happy to invite you and your best British Parliamentary debating teams attend the United States Universities Debate Championships. The USU debates will be held on our campus on April 13 - 15, 2012.
The tournament will host an open competition in British Parliamentary debate based on the model of the World Universities Debate Championships. The tournament will consist of six preliminary and four elimination debates. The tournament will use tight motions and concensus judging with decisions revealed at the conclusion of each debate.
Because of space limitations, we will limit the tournament to 200 teams and will initially limit each institution to six teams. Registration will be conducted using forensictournament.net. Registration will open on January 20, 2012. On February 15, we will close registration and calculate the number of teams and judges entered. After February 15, we will ask all schools to confirm the number of teams and judges. After we have a good idea of the number of teams and judges entered, we will then allow schools to request to bring additional teams beyond the initial maximum of six.
Each institution is expected to bring a minimum of one judge. The total number of judges required for every school is the number of of entered teams minus 1 (N - 1). If you are unable to bring enough judges to cover your teams we will do our best to hire one for you at a cost of $250 per uncovered team. All judges are required to attend the judge training on Friday morning and all those wishing to be considered as a panel chair are required to attend the chair's training.
Participation fees are $120 per team and $60 per judge. Fees will be waived for any schools from Europe, Asia, or any continent other than North America. Checks for tournament fees should be made to Willamette University. Tournament fees are due on the first day the tournament and schools who have not paid fees will not be allowed to participate.
Teams traveling from a distance will wish to fly to Portland International Airport (PDX), approximately 1 hour drive to Salem. The airport contains a number of rental car facilities and a shuttle service called the Hut (http://www.hutshuttle.com/) is available for a $64 round trip.
We hope you are able to join us for the US Universities Debate Championships in April.
